It was Liechtenstein who received the first top mark of the jury voting, but by the second jury Belgium took the lead and they only lent it out to Mexico for the shortest of times. By jury number 5, Belgium was again and top and then they never looked back winning the jury vote by a margin of 26 points. Ukraine took second place followed by San Marino, Spain and Austria. The question was only, if the public could change things with their votes. The televotes was won by San Marino closely followed by United Kingdom (who finished only 20th with the juries) and Slovakia (18th). Denmark was 4th with the public (16th with the juries) and Belgium just squeezed into the top 5. And that was enough to keep San Marino at bay, ultimately winning by a margin of 11 points. Spain took the bronze medal just ahead of Austria and Ukraine.
Belgium was one of the founding members of the contest, though they skipped a few editions in the early days and also changed HoD quite often. They won their first medal - one of silver - when Lara Fabian came close to victory in GM23, and until their first victory in their 50th attempt, Belgium only achieved 8 top 10 results. It was Tom Dice and Elisa Tovati who finally did it for Belgium in GM66, but it seemed like a fluke as the good results were few and far between. In the next 100 editions Belgium took home another 4 medals, but always finished on the last step of the podium. Then in GM208 they finally triumphed again, when Lost Frequencies, Elley Duhé and X Ambassadors came together and found the winning formula. With a gap of 142 editions between their first and second trophy, no one expected Belgium to strike gold again any time soon, but only 4 editions later, they took home their third gold medal with Loïc Nottet. And only another 8 editions after their third triumph, Belgium added their 4th trophy to the cabinet in GM219 with Oscar and the Wolf. In GM222 they could celebrate again when Angèle reached the top of the podium, and just 5 editions later Belgium once again scores most points, this time at the voice of Pierre de Maere. Belgium has really become a GM power house, having won 5 gold medals in the last 19 editions. Truly remarkable! Well done Belgium, Pierre de Maere and Yisus!
