The first half of the jury voting was very exciting and close with the leading changing hands with almost every jury. Sweden kicked off with the first top mark and took the lead. Belgium, South Korea, Netherlands and Ireland all held the top spot at some point, before Italy took over halfway through all the juries. After that Italy did not look back and built up a 32 point lead by the end of the jury voting. Sweden was in second place followed by Belgium, South Korea and China. It thus seemed like a battle between Europe and Asia before going into the televote results. Like we have seen so many times before, the public had a different favourite, awarding most points to United States, who was only 12th with the juries. The next three countries were also part of the top 5 with the juries: Belgium, Italy and China. Denmark was fifth (8th with the juries). Combining the juries and the televote, Italy came out on top ahead of host country Belgium, China, Sweden and United States.
Italy made their debut in GM08 and reached the top 10 for the first time only 2 editions later. After that Italy struggled to make a dent in the scoreboard, but following a short break, they came back stronger than ever, winning 3 consecutive medals including their first victory in GM27, when Nek triumphed. Since then In-Grid took home the gold medal in GM55 and Giorgia did it in GM74 followed by Elisa in GM122. Only a few editions later, in GM126 Italy stroke gold again with Alessio Bernabei finishing on top, and then Alfie Arcuri became the 6th Italian champion in GM145. Italy has come close to victory another 5 times since then, but have had to settle for a place further down the podium each time. Since their debut, Italy has now taken part 208 times. They have been to 158 finals, reaching the top 10 in 62 of those and winning a total of 23 medals! This gold medal is the 6th for Raquel, who took over the Italian delegation back in GM38. Well done Italy, Damiano David and Raquel!
