Throughout the jury vote, 8 different countries held the top spot at some point. China got the first douze points, but quickly passed the lead to Switzerland and then Ukraine, Liechtenstein, Albania, Sweden and Spain. The 18th jury sent South Korea to the top and they stayed there for the rest of the jury vote, winning with a comfortable margin. Uganda was next in line followed by France, Canada and Sweden. Would the public agree with this and send the contest to Asia? Absolutely not! In fact there was not a single overlapping country in the jury and televote top 5! Albania was the overwhelming favorite with the public, even though they were only 11th with the juries. Liechtenstein was the public's runner-up (15th with the juries) followed by United States (19th), Poland (12th) and United Kingdom (25th). As 13 players were part of the televote, its impact on the final result was bigger and since South Korea and Uganda - the favorites with the juries - didn't have much support with the public, finishing 23rd and 19th respectively, France could overtake both and take the gold just 3 points ahead of the winner of the telvote, Albania. South Korea had to settle for the bronze medal, with Spain and Uganda rounding out the top 5.
France debuted way back in GM03, but it was only in their 3rd attempt they reached the top 10. The first medal came in GM11, but the proud country had to wait for several years, before they finally stroke gold in GM60, when Grégory Lemarchal came out on top. In the next 10 editions, France came really close to a second victory three times, but had to settle for the silver each time. Then in GM90 Julien Comblat was the most popular artist and brought the contest back to France. Twice France has won The Double, and both Indila and Kendji Girac are Double Champions. Half of the last four gold medals were won by duos; first Matthieu Mendès and Pomme in GM98 and secondly David Guetta and Swedish singer Zara Larsson in GM125. The last two trophies were at the hands of soloists, one female and one male, with Philippine triumphing in GM164 and Casanova in GM193, and now we are back to the duos. France has now taken part 210 times, qualifying for 162 finals, reaching the top 10 in 86 of those and winning a total of 26 medals! This gold medal is the 11th for France, and the third for Deo, who took over as French HoD in GM155. Well done France, Jeck, Carla and Deo!
