This was one of the most memorable and exciting votings in recent memory! The lead changed hands several times throughout the voting, and when all votes were counted, only 10 points separated the top 5! It was France who stood tall and mighty in the end, beating South Africa and Denmark into 2nd and 3rd place. New Zealand achieved their best result ever in 4th, while Norway rounded out the top 5, both just a few points from the medals.
France debuted way back in GM/03, but it was only in their 3rd attempt they reached the top 10. The first medal came in GM/11, but the proud country had to wait for several years, before they finally stroke gold in GM/60, when Grégory Lemarchal came out on top. In the next 10 editions, France came really close to a second victory three times, but had to settle for the silver each time. Then in GM/90 Julien Comblat was the most popular artist and brought the contest back to France. Since then they have finished in the top 10 12 times including 5 more gold medals! Twice France has even won The Double, and both Indila and Kendji Girac are now Double Champions. The last gold medal was won by Matthieu Mendès and Pomme in a duo and now another duo joins the winner's Hall of Fame: David Guetta and Swedish singer Zara Larsson. France has now taken part 102 times, qualifying for 80 finals, reaching the top 10 in 48 of those and winning a total of 16 medals! This gold medal is the 7th for HoD David. Well done France, David and Zara and David!
