Global Music 236: Tripoli

Welcome to Tripoli!

As Bahjat managed to win the contest and give Libya its 1st trophy, we are moving south to North Africa and settle in Libya's capital Tripoli by the Mediterranean Sea.

37 countries have signed up to participate, which is 2 less than last time! Bosnia-Herzegovina and San Marino are both back after short breaks.

Just one Global Music Champion is in the line-up this time but another 5 Medallists are fighting to be able to better their previous result. All these medallists will battle against a string of other returnees as well as a lot of debuting artists. Who will come out on top is up to you!

The first hurdle in Tripoli is the semi finals, from which 21 countries will qualify for the final as usual.

We are so excited, so let's get inside Tripoli Fairgrounds for the semi finals!

Let the show begin here!

Votes are due December 13th

The voting period is one day shorter than usual.
This is to be able to have all the voting for the final done before Christmas with the results coming out during the holidays.

Ping Pong is sad...

Picture
For the last final we asked Ping Pong to predict the winner, and he did not do very well.
So now he is a bit sad, and we had to promise him that he would have another chance next time...

Ping Pong's 5 picks for a winner were Switzerland, China, Ukraine, Poland and Spain.
As you know, none of them won, but Ukraine did reach the top 5, and Netherlands who was one of Ping Pong's dark horses took the silver medal.

This is how Ping Pong's picks fared:
2nd place: Netherlands - Dark horse
5th place: Ukraine
10th place: China
12th place: Poland
13th place: Switzerland
21st place: Philippines - Dark horse
22nd place: Australia - Dark horse
24th place: Spain

Let's see if his prediction skills have improved when we reach the final of GM236.

You have decided...

Three suggestions were put forward in the latest Poll for the Players, giving you the chance to make changes to the game.

And here is what you decided to do:

1st suggestion:
Make voting mandatory for all participating players, whether they qualified for the final or not.

Result:
YES, Voting in the final should be made mandatory =                     42 %
NO, Voting in final should remain an option for non-qualifiers =  58 %

Outcome:
No changes will be made. If you do not qualify for the final, you can choose for yourself if you want to vote in the final or not. However, you will still be urged to so, as having as many players voting as possible will give the most fair and correct result.

2nd suggestion:
Tighten rule 3e to prevent an artist from participating too often.

Result:
YES, an artist should only be able to participate twice in 10 editions =  53 %
NO, keep it as it is now with a max of 3 participations =                            47 %

Outcome:
As of GM237, an artist can only participate in twice within 10 consecutive editions, no matter which country the artist is representing. A country can only send the same artist twice within 10 consecutive participations, even though there might be gaps of non-participation between the participations.

3rd suggestion:
Introduce a 3 editions commitment for the same country.

Result:
YES, a player should stick to the same country for at least 3 editions =              56 %
NO, a player should be able to change country as often as he/she wants to =  44 %

Outcome:
As of GM237, you have to stick with the same country for at least 3 eidtions, before you are allowed to change to another one.

Taking a break...

As mentioned in my email yesterday, I have decided that it is necessary to pause Global Music in October. There is simply not enough time for me to devote to the contest, and I prefer taking a break to doing the next edition half-heartedly.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING!

But don't despair! Global Music will be back in November with a new edition.
This just gives you more time to select your next song if you haven't already submitted it. I just need it by October 28th at the latest.

Take care of yourselves until then 💕

global music turns 20 years old

Global Music was born in August 2005 and now turns 20 years old!

When I started the contest I could never have imagined that it would still be going strong so many years later.
It makes me both happy and proud to be able to celebrate this milestone with you all.
Without you there would not be a contest for me to run - so THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Some of you have joined Global Music this year, and some of you have been with me for 10-15 years or even longer.
In fact, two of the players from the very first edition are still actively taking part! So a special shout out to Bosnia-Herzegovina's Anel and Canada's Luis!
Not that they are more important than any other player - they are not - but to me it is quite remarkable to think of.

To commemorate this milestone I have put together a Spotify playlist with all our winning songs (except for 3 which were not available on the platform)
So take a trip down memory lane and enjoy all the magical winners in Global Music's 20 years.

In Memoriam

It is with the greatest sadness that I pass on the message that we have lost one of our dear Global Music family members.
Yesterday Raquel passed away and flew off to a better place where she will be surrounded by angels, listening to the music which was always a great passion to her.

Raquel joined Global Music back in april 2007 and since then only missed very few editions.
Her first country was Iran, but she also played for Sweden before she became the HoD for Italy in GM38.
She stuck with Italy until as recently as GM229, after which she had to take a break due to illness.
Along the way, she managed to win 6 gold medals, the last one being in March this year.

I will always remember Raquel as a very kind, positive and punctual person, who really enjoyed being part of our family.
And for me she was a joy to have in the game, always eager for a new edition, enjoying the music and the competition.

Thank you dear Raquel for all the great music you shared with us, for your unwavering support and always so kind words.
You will truly be missed.

On behalf of our Global Music family, I send my deepest condolences to Raquel's family and friends, who have suffered the greatest loss.
My prayers are with you in this very difficult time.

Rest in Peace sweet Angel

A special invitation for all...

Picture
ROBERT
Dear fellow contestants!

When I wrote an email to a stranger on the internet in March 2008, applying for my first entry in an online song contest called "Global Music", I had no idea that after more than 17 years and thousands of great songs later, I would still be excitedly looking forward every month to get to know lots of new songs and later, when the points are awarded, I would be thrilled to see how my song and my favorite song in each edition performs.

This June, I will be submitting my 200th song to Global Music for the United States, and after blocking this country from all of you for so long, I thought that to celebrate this occasion, YOU all will decide which song will compete for me in this special edition. For this reason, I'm calling all of you to send to Mikkel up to three songs of your choice by April 25th (please include your priority order, and of course, only songs that are eligible for the US according to the rules). The only requirement is that the song is available on Spotify.

Afterwards, we will be celebrating a US Melody Festival on Hawaii in May, with a Spotify songlist featuring your suggested songs, and I´ll invite you to award your points and thus choose my song for Edition 231. Got it? Then, I'm eagerly awaiting your suggestions and am delighted that you're all participating in this important National selection.

Thanks and all the best!
Robert
HoD United States

As the Global Music Manager I thank Robert for this fantastic initiative, and I urge you all to help him celebrate this personal milestone!

Simply sent your 3 suggested songs in a simple email to me and I will pass it on to Robert.

THANK YOU ALL

New logo and identity

Picture

2025 is the year when Global Music turns 20 years old!

I figured this called for a fresh new logo and identity.

As you have already seen, GM228 kicked off the new identity, where Global Music fully embraces the fact that it showcases a virtual world with only the music being real.
To show this, all images are now made in the style of a graphic novel, creating a quirky and fun world for our beloved contest. Many of you have already commented on these images and all comments have been positive, ranging from "great fun" to "simply stunning". I'm glad that you like the new look, which will spread out onto the different sections of the website in time.

And here is also the brand new and colourful logo created especially for Global Music!

LONG LIVE GLOBAL MUSIC!

global music royalty

Our Royalty programme has been on a bit of hiatus since October. Usually the coronations take a break over Christmas and New Year, while the annual Super Final is running alongside the regular editions, so this is nothing new.

However, a new Royalty should have been selected in February, but due to some very stressful months for me with a heavy work load and a lot of other commitments, I simply forgot to run it in February...  And I just realized that I haven't even presented the Global Music Royalty selected back in October! So that will be done shortly.

Our next Global Music Royalty will now be chosen in April. Over the last couple of weeks I have happily received several nominations for Global Music Royalty. Thank you for that and keep the nominations coming. However, do keep in mind that to become a Global Music Royalty, an artist need to have done something extraordinary in our contest. It can be many participations, consistantly strong results, a pioneering achivement (like the first Asian to win a medal) etc. It is not enough to have just participated once and winning a gold medal, no matter how big a star the artist generally is.

Nomination form is here

GLOBAL MUSIC 226: Shanghai

Welcome to Shanghai!

As Griff managed to win the contest for the second time within a span of just 3 editions and give China its 3rd trophy, we are moving to Asia, settling in fascinating metropolis of Shanghai!

44 countries have signed up to participate, which is one more than last time!
GM226 sees the return of the staple houses Mexico, Portugal and Russia and one of the lesser frequent European countries: Austria. Finally we will also see a more exotic and rarely seen country in the form of Botswana.
We have no new players this week, but I do have the pleasure to welcome back Sandro after a break of two years!

There are 2 Global Music Champions in the line-up this time and another 5 Medallists are fighting to be able to better their previous result. All these medallists will battle against a string of other returnees as well as a lot of debuting artists. Who will come out on top is up to you!

Super Final - Round 2

Yesterday, we saw the kick off of Round 2 in the 2024 Super Final.

Of the 26 songs in Round 1, 14 songs progressed to Round 2, where they have been joined by all the Silver and Bronze Medal winning songs of 2024.

Round 2 thus consists of 19 duels, and you just have to choose your favourite song in each duel. Very simple and easy to do.

34 players cast their votes in Round 1, so I'm counting on at least the same number of voters in Round 2. At this moment, 10 players have already sent in their ballots!

Voting closes on January 9th.
