After the second dury, Netherlands took the lead and apart from handing it over to Czech Republic during a single jury vote, held on to it almost to the end. However, with a handful of juries left to cast their votes, San Marino was pushed in the lead and ended up winning the jury vote a few points ahead of Netherlands. Germany, Czech Republic and Norway made up the rest of the top 5 with the juries. None of these countries featured in the top 4 with the televoters, who gave most points to France, who had only finished 13th with the juries. United States (19th with the juries) and Andorra (18th) finished second and third respectively, while Bosnia-Herzegovina (16th) was fourth. San Marino took 5th place with the televoters, and as Netherlands landed down in 24th place, it ended up as a clear victory for San Marino. So big was the collapse of the Netherlands in the televote that they even had to relinquish their silver medal to Germany and settle for the bronze themselves. The top 5 was rounded out by Czech Republic and the public's winner France.
San Marino made its debut in GM10 with a solid 4th place finish. However, after only 5 participations they quit the contest and didn't return until GM31. It then took only another 5 participations, before the tiny country could call themselves Global Music Champions! Appassionante, their first champion, could be called a female version of their later champions, Il Volo - winning in GM120 - so it seems that this sound works well for San Marino. They have, however, also triumphed with a more mainstream pop sound, when Tony Maiello took home the gold in GM80. After being a regular participant for almost 100 editions, San Marino quit the contest following GM161, but returned in GM172 with a new HoD, Paolo, who got off to the perfect start, claiming victory in his first attempt with Diodato. However, San Marino quickly came back to earth and had to wait until GM185 to finish inside the top 10 again. The good form then returned, and San Marino won back to back editions in GM201 and GM202 with La Rappresentante di Lista and Marghe. This is thus their 7th victory, making San Marino more successful in Global Music than their big brother Italy, who has claimed victory 6 times. San Marino has now taken part 152 times, and has a qualifying percentage envied by many, as they have been to 119 finals, reaching the top 10 in 55 of those and winning a total of 15 medals! Well done San Marino, Annalisa and Paolo!
