Morocco got off to a strong start but had to pass on the lead to Canada and then Spain, before Belgium and Bulgaria took turns in leading the pack. Belgium then gained further momentum and pulled away, and although Canada briefly fought back and held the lead for a short time, Belgium ended up winning the jury vote. Spain was the closest competitor followed by Bulgaria, Canada and Monaco. The public had another favourite, though, and awarded most points to Denmark, who had only finished 14th with the juries. Netherlands (7th) was the public's second choice and then came Monaco, Solomon Islands (22nd) and Belgium. This meant that Belgium could be crowned the champion even before being awarded their points from the televote. 37 points behind Spain claimed the silver, while Monaco took home the bronze. Netherlands and Canada rounded out the top 5.
Belgium was one of the founding members of the contest, though they skipped a few editions in the early days and also changed HoD quite often. They won their first medal - one of silver - when Lara Fabian came close to victory in GM23, and until their first victory in their 50th attempt, Belgium only achieved 8 top 10 results. It was Tom Dice and Elisa Tovati who finally did it for Belgium in GM66, but it seemed like a fluke as the good results were few and far between. In the next 100 editions Belgium took home another 4 medals, but always finished on the last step of the podium. Then in GM208 they finally triumphed again, when Lost Frequencies, Elley Duhé and X Ambassadors came together and found the winning formula. With a gap of 142 editions between their first and second trophy, no one expected Belgium to strike gold again any time soon, but only 4 editions later, they took home their third gold medal with Loïc Nottet. And only another 8 editions after their third triumph, Belgium can add their 4th trophy to the cabinet, having now competed a total of 159 times, reaching 100 finals, finishing within the top 10 on 35 occasions and winning 9 medals. Well done Belgium, Oscar and the Wolf and Yisus!
