Welcome to Funchal
"An Abundance of Colorful and Exotic Flora"
The capital of the island of Madeira for more than 500 years, Funchal represents a laid-back city made popular by its historical sites and climate. Named for its plethora of fennel, this city incorporates restaurants, museums, cathedrals, gardens, and a large market. Though it may be most well known as the birthplace of famed soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo, this city's wealth came from Madeiran sugar. Tourists enjoy local crafts and wines, chatting with friendly islanders, and the ease with which they can navigate the city on foot or via taxi.

The Result
Countries receiving most 12 points / United Kingdom, 4
Countries giving 12 points to the winner / Russia and Slovenia
Countries receiving points from most juries / Finland and United Kingdom, 22
Highest placing country not scoring a top mark / Belgium in 4th with 10 points from Australia, San Marino, North Macedonia, Denmark and Iran as highest marks
Lowest placing country scoring a top mark / Ireland in 24th getting 12 points from Germany, Italy and Netherlands
Ireland received the first 2 top marks and thus took an early lead, but after a few juries they had to pass on the lead, as their points dried up. Several countries took turns on top of the scoreboard, before it apparently became a race between Belgium, Germany and United Kingdom. When all juries had voted United Kingdom was in the lead ahead of Belgium, Finland, Canada and Sweden. But as we have seen several times before, the televote told a different story, favouring Finland ahead of Georgia, Canada, North Macedonia and Albania. When United Kingdom as the last country were to receive their points from the televote they needed 37 points to beat Finland. The televote rewarded the UK with 36 points (6th place) leading to a tie for first place. According to the rules, the winner was then the country scoring most points with the televote. Here Finland outscored the UK 57-36 and was crowned the winner. United Kingdom had to settle for the silver, while Canada took home the bronze. Belgium and Sweden rounded out the top five.
Finland has been part of the GM family ever since the very first edition and has done consistantly well over the years. They won their first medal in their 13th attempt in GM15, when Agnes took the silver. Another two medals followed with Johanna Kurkela and Anna Abreu both winning the bronze medal in GM25 and GM37 respectively, before Finland could finally lift the trophy in GM41, when Poets of the Fall finished on top. Another 2 medals for Jenni Vartiainen followed, before Finland had the first change of HoD. With a new captain Finland saw a string of top 10 results and came very close to a second victory twice, before Lovex claimed gold in GM92 at the hands of Finland's 3rd HoD. After this, Finland had strong results including 6 consecutive top 10 finishes, but after a while participations became less frequent and the HoD changed several times. GM133 resulted in another silver medal, but a few editions later Finland took a 27 edition break. Current HoD, David, came onboard in GM172 and has reached the top 10 three times and now brings the trophy back to Finland for the third time. This is his first victory in GM, despite having represented different countries throughout his several years in the contest. Well done Portion Boys, Finland and David!
