Welcome to Valencia
"City of Mediterranean Light"
A charming old city originally founded as a Roman colony, Valencia is the country’s third-largest urban center. The birthplace of paella, the city hosts numerous festivals throughout the year and has a lively nightlife that attracts young weekend revelers from around the country. A highlight of most visitors’ holiday itinerary is the City of Arts and Sciences, a massive architectural complex designed largely by Santiago Calatrava, a local architect of international renown. Valencia is vibrant and friendly, with a historic quarter easily explored on foot or by bicycle.

The Result
Countries receiving most 12 points / North Macedonia, 4
Countries giving 12 points to the winner / Lithuania and Belgium
Countries receiving points from most juries / Ireland, 19
Highest placing country not scoring a top mark / United States in 6th with 10 points from Lithuania and Portugal as highest marks
Lowest placing country scoring a top mark / China in 24th getting 12 points from Morocco
Early leaders included North Macedonia, Netherlands and Iran, but one fourth into the jury vote Ireland took the lead, kept their cool and stayed ahead of the pack to win the jury vote ahead of North Macedonia, United States, Italy and Sweden. However, none of these five countries made the top 5 with the televote! In stead the public favoured Belgium (who only finished 18th with the juries) followed by Monaco (11th), France (19th), Netherlands (6th) and Bosnia-Herzegovina (10th). North Macedonia finished 6th in the televote and Ireland in 7th, so the Baltic country did not gain enough points on Ireland to take the victory. In fact, Ireland was crowned the winner even before they were awarded their televote points! North Macedonia settled for the silver, which is their third consecutive medal! Netherlands took home the bronze and Italy and Monaco rounded out the top 5.
Ireland was one of the founding members of GM, but after a disappointing debut they skipped the next two editions. They came back without much success and quit again after two participations. With a new HoD, Ireland came back in GM09, though their results were still far from impressive, but that all changed in an instant when Brian McFadden and Delta Goodrem secured victory for the Emerald Island in GM13. Ireland came close again in GM17, but had to settle for the silver. Quite a few top 10 finishes followed, before they once again hit a dry spell. This was also a time when the HoD changed frequently. In fact, when Ireland finally won their third medal in GM104, it was at the hands of the 14th HoD! Another 4 HoD down the line, Westlife brough silver back to Ireland in GM166, and in GM180 the current HoD, Norbert, took over the reigns. In his short tenure, Ireland has finished in the top 10 on 4 occasions, and he now crowns it with Ireland's long overdue second victory. In total Ireland has now participated 99 times, reached 67 finals, finished in the top 10 25 times and won 5 medals. Well done Ireland, Dermot Kennedy and Norbert!
