The Result
Countries receiving most 12 points / Canada, 5
Countries giving 12 points to the winner / Andorra, China and United Arab Emirates
Countries receiving points from most juries / Denmark, 21
Highest placing country not scoring a top mark / Monaco in 4th with 10 points from Ireland, Spain, Israel and United Arab Emirates as highest marks
Lowest placing country scoring a top mark / Poland in 25th getting 12 points from Australia
With each of the first 7 juries we saw a new country taking the lead. Germany received the first top mark, but was quickly replaced at the top. First by San Marino and then Russia, South Korea, Bosnia-Herzegovina, South Africa and Canada. As the voting progressed it turned into a three way race between San Marino, Sweden and United Kingdom, and when all 26 juries had cast their votes Sweden was on top of the scoreboard but closely followed by United Kingdom, San Marino, South Africa and Estonia. In fact, it was such a close race that the top 5 was only separated by 11 points. Would the televote then turn everything upside down? The topscorer with the public was Italy, who had only finished 22nd with the juries. Then followed San Marino, Cyprus (16th), Monaco (8th) and South Africa. Sweden and United Kingdom only finished 15th and 20th respectively in the televote and thus had to see San Marino leap ahead and claim the victory on home soil. San Marino thus becomes only the fifth country to achieve this feat in the history of Global Music. Previously, back to back victories were achieved by:
Romania in GM04 and GM05
Sweden in GM16 and GM17 and then three times in a row from GM32 to GM34
France in GM97 and GM98 and again in GM103 and GM104
United Kingdom in GM109 and GM110
South Africa took home the silver and Sweden won the bronze, with Monaco and United Kingdom rounding out the top 5.
San Marino made its debut in GM10 with a solid 4th place finish. However, after only 5 participations they quit the contest and didn't return until GM31. It then took only another 5 participations, before the tiny country could call themselves Global Music Champions! Appassionante, their first champion, could be called a female version of their later champions, Il Volo - winning in GM120 - so it seems that this sound works well for San Marino. They have, however, also triumphed with a more mainstream pop sound, when Tony Maiello took home the gold in GM80. After being a regular participant for almost 100 editions, San Marino quit the contest following GM161, but returned in GM172 with a new HoD, Paolo, who got off to the perfect start, claiming victory in his first attempt with Diodato. However, San Marino quickly came back to earth and had to wait until GM185 to finished inside the top 10 again, but this has now happened 9 times since and just last edition they took home the gold for the fifth time by La Rappresentante di Lista. San Marino has now taken part 139 times, and has a qualifying percentage envied by many, as they have been to 107 finals, reaching the top 10 in 49 of those and winning a total of 13 medals! Well done San Marino, Marghe and Paolo!
