The Result
Countries receiving most 12 points / Andorra, Ireland and United States, 4
Countries giving 12 points to the winner / United States, Lithuania, Italy and Philippines
Countries receiving points from most juries / Ireland, 19
Highest placing country not scoring a top mark / Germany in 12th with 8 points from United States and San Marino as highest marks
Lowest placing country scoring a top mark / Slovakia in 26th getting 12 points from North Macedonia and Australia
United States took the lead after the second jury and only briefly lent it to first San Marino and then Ireland and Belgium. However, when all the juries had cast their votes, United States was back on top with Ireland not far behind. A bigger gap led to the rest of the top five: Belgium, Czech Republic and San Marino. Everybody knows though that it isn't over till it's over! And interestingly, the televote almost turned everything upside down. Ireland did finish a strong 4th with the public, but the rest of the jury top 3 ended in the bottom 2 with the public, as United States finished second last ahead of Belgium! In stead the public favoured Australia (who had only finished 24th with the juries) ahead of Andorra (9th) and China (26th). Palestine (22nd) rounded out the top 5. So in fact 3 of the jury top 5 ended bottom 5 in the televote and vice versa! Combining the juries and the public, Ireland ran over United States, who had to settle for the silver. Andorra claimed the bronze and South Korea and San Marino rounded out the top 5. It was San Marino's 4th consecutive top 5 finish!
Ireland was one of the founding members of GM, but after a disappointing debut they skipped the next two editions. They came back without much success and quit again after two participations. With a new HoD, Ireland came back in GM09, though their results were still far from impressive, but that all changed in an instant when Brian McFadden and Delta Goodrem secured victory for the Emerald Island in GM13. Ireland came close again in GM17, but had to settle for the silver. Quite a few top 10 finishes followed, before they once again hit a dry spell. This was also a time when the HoD changed frequently. In fact, when Ireland finally won their third medal in GM104, it was at the hands of the 14th HoD! Another 4 HoD down the line, Westlife brough silver back to Ireland in GM166, and in GM180 the current HoD, Norbert, took over the reigns, and already in GM190 he and Dermot Kennedy achieved Ireland's long overdue second victory. Luckily, they did not have to wait that long for their third trophy. In total Ireland has now participated 113 times, reached 77 finals, finished in the top 10 30 times and won 6 medals. Well done Ireland, Cian Ducrot and Norbert!
