After the ninth jury had cast its votes, Belgium took the lead and held it all the way to the end, winning the jury vote a massive 34 points ahead of China, Serbia, Ukraine and Denmark. It seemed like the victory was secure, because who could rack up enough points with the televote to overtake Belgium? Well, well, well... The public - like so many times before - had a completely different favourite, and never before had they rallied so wholeheartedly behind one song. San Marino only finished 20th with the juries, but the public loved them and placed them way ahead of the rest with an unprecedented margin of 39 points! Netherlands (10th with the juries) finished a distant runner-up in the televote followed by Slovakia (19th), China and Ukraine. The public only placed Belgium in 22nd place, but with just enough points to stay one point ahead of San Marino, who leaped like a tiger into the runner-up position. China took home the bronze and Serbia and Ukraine rounded out the top 5.
Belgium was one of the founding members of the contest, though they skipped a few editions in the early days and also changed HoD quite often. They won their first medal - one of silver - when Lara Fabian came close to victory in GM23, and until their first victory in their 50th attempt, Belgium only achieved 8 top 10 results. It was Tom Dice and Elisa Tovati who finally did it for Belgium in GM66, but it seemed like a fluke as the good results were few and far between. Since that first gold medal Belgium has finished on the podium 4 times, but always on the last step and not since GM168. Now, on their return to the contest with a new HoD and with their 149th entry, Belgium can finally lift the trophy for a second time and look back on 90 finals, 28 top 10 results and 7 medals. Well done Belgium, Lost Frequencies, Elley Duhé, X Ambassadors and Yisus!
