The Result
Countries receiving most 12 points / Denmark, France and United Kingdom, 4
Countries giving 12 points to the winner / Estonia and Sweden
Countries receiving points from most juries / Armenia and Slovakia, 20
Highest placing country not scoring a top mark / Cyprus in 11th with 10 points from Albania as highest mark
Lowest placing country scoring a top mark / Ireland in 25th getting 12 points from Monaco
Denmark received the first top mark, but quickly passed it on to Bahrain and Cyprus, who kept it until about a third of juries had voted. Mali then briefly held the top spot before United Kingdom took over until the 15th jury sent France in the lead. The French held onto it almost to the end before first Denmark and ultimately United Kingdom took back the lead and settled on top of the scoreboard after the jury vote. Denmark was, however, hot on their heels and closely followed by France, Slovakia and Armenia. The televote saw 3 other countries enter the top 5 and with the jury top 3 finishing outside the televote top 5, we could once again see the televote shake things up. Slovakia was the public's favourite ahead of Canada (who was 6th with the juries), Poland (7th), Finland (9th) and Armenia, so the taste of the juries and the public did not differ that much after all. But since United Kingdom finished only 19th in the televote, Denmark 18th and France 8th, Slovakia managed to jump ahead and claim their second victory. Canada took home the silver, the bronze went to France and United Kingdom and Armenia rounded out the top 5.
Slovakia debuted in GM21, but didn't qualify for the final and quickly left the contest again. They did not return until in GM59 and again failed to reach the final. However, this time they did not quit right away and in GM61 they reached their first final and even finished in the top 10 with a respectable 7th place. This seemed to be a fluke though, as Slovakia only reached one more final until they hit it big and took home the gold in GM70, when Kristina finished on top. However, they could not follow up on this succes and quit again 12 editions later. They only competed a handful of times until current HoD, Viki, took over in GM203. Slovakia's fortune then seemed to turn overnight, as they reached 4th place with Viki's first entry and has since reached the top 10 three other times. Slovakia remains on the European countries with the fewest participations, but with the current HoD they are poised to change that. Their second gold medal came with their 36th participation, 19th final and 9th top 10 result. Well done Slovakia, ADONXS and Viki!
