Switzerland started off strong and took an early lead, but it quickly seemed to turn into a battle for first place between Denmark and United Kingdom. Towards the end of the jury vote, however, Germany caught up and even pushed ahead, until Andorra received the last top mark and won the jury vote. It was a very close race and Denmark, Germany, United Kingdom and United States were not far behind in the next places. Would the televote turn things around again? Germany was the favourite with the public, while Spain (finished 11th with the juries, Ireland (18th), Denmark and Lithuania (16th) made up the rest of the top 5. Andorra only finished 12th in the televote and could not keep the public's favourite down. So Germany took the gold, while Denmark won the silver, and Andorra had to settle for the bronze. United Kingdom and Spain rounded out the top 5.
Germany is one of the founding members of Global Music and has to date competed 199 times, reaching 142 finals with 67 top 10 finishes. They didn't have the smoothest start to their GM career, as they only inched into the top 10 twice in their first 7 attempts. Things quickly turned around though, and Germany won GM10 with Sarah Connor and took the silver only 9 editions later. From GM24 on through GM39 they won another 5 medals and reached the top 10 on a further 7 occasions! However, Germany had to wait until GM54 for their second gold, when Mehrzah Marashi scored most points and then another 46 editions for the third trophy, which was won by Oonagh in GM100. Following this victory, Germany struggled a bit, though they did reach the top 10 every so often, but in the following 60 editions they only took home two medals. Michael Schulte brought gold to Germany again in GM161, and since then they have come very close to that fifth trophy, taking home another 6 medals. And now they finally succeed in that, as Purple Disco Machine and Sophie and the Giants scored the most points this time. Germany's current HoD, Maaian, took over the delegation back in GM90 and was thus also responsible for Germany's last two victories. He did leave his post for a couple of years and returned in GM146, and this gold medal is his third. Well done Germany, Purple Disco Machine and Sophie and the Giants and Maaian!
