Welcome to Nicosia
"The last devided Capital"
Experience a combination of traditional and modern Cyprus, including archaeological sites encircled by ancient walls, in the country's capital, Nicosia. Though landlocked, the capital serves as a tourist destination and boasts buildings and monuments from many different empires. Behind Venetian walls lies the old town, which includes the Cyprus museum - complete with Roman and Neolithic finds - and an abundance of churches, mosques, and other structures. While it is often called "the last divided capital," the city's reputation is slowly changing with the times. On the other side of the walls, you'll find Nicosia's blooming cultural cafe scene.

Three countries held the lead at some point through the voting, and these three countries ended up filling the podium. Australia held the lead for the longest and manged to just squeeze by Netherlands in the end, taking home their second trophy. Netherlands was only 2 points behind, while Canada was off by 5 points taking the bronze. Both countries have still to win the contest, and both have finished as runner-up 3 times. United Kingdom and United States rounded out the top 5. Denmark finished 6th and thus managed to finish in the top 10 in every single edition of the year!
Australia debuted in GM04, sending Delta Goodrem as their first participant. They reached the top ten on their second attempt in GM06 and took home the first medal - a silver medal for Kylie Minogue - in GM11. As they couldn't follow up on this, Australia quit a few editions later, and did not return until GM23 and then went on to take the gold in the following edition with Delta Goodrem, who at the same time became the first artist to win GM twice! She also won for Ireland in GM13. Strangely enough, Australia quit the contest again after having hosted it for the first time, but came back in GM29 with a new HoD, Per, who is still running the show. He has managed to put Australia on the podium 5 times, finishing as runner-up just 3 editions ago, when Delta Goodrem was very close to becoming Triple Champion. But now, with a little help from American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks, local star Guy Sebastian brings the trophy back down under. Well done Australia, Guy Sebastian, Jordin Sparks and Per!
