Welcome to Rønne
"By the Grace of the Lighthouse"
Rønne is the largest town on the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. It has a population of around 14,000. Owing to its natural harbour and its strategic position in the Baltic Sea, Rønne has an interesting history coming under German and Swedish influence during its development as a herring fishing port. Today, with its cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and interesting museums, it attracts visitors mainly from Denmark, Germany, Sweden and Poland. Rønne probably originated around the year 1000 when a small fishing community grew up around the natural harbour. Around 1275, a small chapel dedicated to St Nicolas was built on the site where Rønne's church now stands. The community was soon granted the status of a market town with its own mayor and council and its own law court. However, by the beginning of the 14th century, the King of Denmark, the Archbishop of Lund and even various north German princes were all competing for control of the town. The Germans took a special interest in Bornholm because of its strategic position in the Baltic Sea between the German coast and Visby in Gotland, off the coast of southern Sweden, at times establishing their own interests in the town. After the church's expansion in 1360, the parish of Rønne was established.

With each of the first 11 juries, the lead changed, but then Portugal took over creating a bigger and bigger lead. In the end they made the perfect comeback, winning for the third times with a margin of 37 points over United States who took the silver, while the bronze went to Bosnia-Herzegovina. It was their 7th and 6th medal in total. Australia and Liechtenstein rounded out the top 5 - the first time ever for Liechtenstein.
Portugal is one of the founding members of Global Music and got off to a strong start with 3 top 10 finishes in the first 4 editions. Their next top 10 result came in GM11 when they went all the way to the top of the podium with David Fonseca. Following that first victory Portugal struggled a bit, but did manage to reach the top 10 on a handful of occasions. However, Portugal did not qualify for the final from GM36 to GM45, but when they finally made it they did so in style taking home their second gold medal with Rosa Negra in GM46. Portugal then participated two more times before taking a break for 3 editions. And now on their comeback Catarina Pereira strikes gold for Portugal. Well done Portugal, Catarina Pereira and José!
