The Result
Countries receiving most 12 points / Cuba, 6
Countries giving 12 points to the winner / San Marino, Albania, Australia, Israel, Poland and Norway
Countries receiving points from most juries / United Kingdom, 23
Highest placing country not scoring a top mark / United Kingdom in 5th with 10 points from Albania, Belarus, Italy, Malta and Norway as highest marks
Lowest placing country scoring a top mark / South Korea in 31st, getting 12 points from Slovakia
At the beginning of the voting it was a very close race between several countries, with the leading changing with each of the first seven juries. Then Mexico took a comfortable lead with several high marks and looked like a clear winner. However, Kosovo and Cuba managed to close the gap and after a close three-way race towards the end, Cuba could be crowned as the winner with a sizeable margin. Mexico took home the silver, and Kosovo won their first medal, when they claimed the bronze. The top 5 was rounded out by Italy and United Kingdom.
Cuba made their debut as late as in GM53 and got off to a strong start, when Gloria Estefan won the bronze medal. After a disappointing second attempt, the island quit the contest for the next 20 editions, before they returned to mixed results. Gloria Estefan managed to reach the top 10 once again, but Cuba also failed to make the final twice. In only their 8th participation Cuba did, however, manage to finish on top to bring the contest to the Caribbean for the first time. Fonso has been HoD for Cuba since their return to the contest, and prior to this he represented Dominican Republic with very little success. In 6 participations, he only reached the final once, but that is all forgotten now, as after 12 editions he can now call himself Global Music Champion! Well done Cuba, Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull and Fonso!
