For the first few set of votes, everything was open, and several countries took turn taking the lead. Portugal quickly pulled ahead though, with only France putting up a fight. However, when all the votes were counted, France had not caught up and Portugal could be crowned as the champion for the fourth time. France had to settle for the silver and Cyprus took the bronze. Denmark and Armenia rounded out the top 5 - the best result ever for Armenia.
Portugal has been a consistent player, having competed 76 times, qualifying for the final on 41 occasions and finishing in the top 14 times, including 4 gold medals. As the numbers show, it has been up and down for Portugal over the years, and they had an especially hard time following their 3rd victory, after which they did not finish in the top 20 for 22 consecutive editions! With Sandro as their 4th HoD, things seem to be lightening up now, and this gold medal is his 4th top 10 finish for Portugal. Prior to heading the Portuguese delegation, Sandro was the German HoD for a long time, and also won the gold plus five silver medals and 2 bronze medals for Germany. Well done Kika, Portugal and Sandro!
