9 Highlights

  1. The Richat Structure, also known as the “Eye of the Sahara,” is a massive circular geological formation visible from space, with concentric rings of rock stretching across the desert near Ouadane.
  2. Chinguetti, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the ancient cities of the Sahara, is famed for its medieval stone architecture and historic libraries preserving centuries-old Islamic manuscripts.
  3. Banc d’Arguin National Park, a vast coastal reserve and UNESCO site, is a haven for migratory birds, with shifting sandbanks, shallow lagoons, and traditional fishing villages.
  4. Ouadane, once an important stop on trans-Saharan trade routes, is a partially abandoned stone town with atmospheric ruins clinging to the desert’s edge.
  5. Atar, the gateway to the Adrar region, is a lively desert town with a bustling market and a starting point for treks into surrounding oases and canyons.
  6. Terjit Oasis, hidden within a narrow gorge, offers palm groves, natural springs, and a cool respite from the surrounding desert heat.
  7. Tidjikja, a historic settlement in the Tagant region, is surrounded by date palm plantations and known for its distinctive Saharan architecture.
  8. Nouakchott Fish Market, a vibrant slice of coastal life, comes alive each morning as brightly painted pirogues return with the day’s catch.
  9. Koumbi Saleh, the archaeological site of a once-prosperous capital of the Ghana Empire, holds remnants of a trading hub that linked West Africa to North Africa centuries ago.
