Nara, located just a short rail journey from Kyoto, is world famous for its ancient temple park with herds of deer, and also holds a museum displaying a collection of fine Chinese and Japanese treasures.
The vibrant city of Hiroshima, set on the Ota River and close to the Inland Sea, is well worth a visit, with its Peace Park, a grim and hauntingly beautiful reminder of inhumanity.
For a trip back in time to the Edo period, visit Kanazawa, set in a remote location on the Honshu coast that boasts narrow streets and the Kazuemachi and Higashi Chayamachi geisha districts which are lined with traditional wooden buildings.
