Blasts from the Past!
AzerbaijanAzerbaijan debuted all the way back in GM/02 and has competed 39 times. We last saw them on stage in GM/104. Azerbaijan has reached the top 10 three times and won a silver medal.
I have selected their most succesful song. The strong popballad "Fallin'" by AySel, which scored 135 points and took home the silver. See all the songs from Azerbaijan |
BangladeshBangladesh debuted in GM/140 and has only competed the one time.
They sent young singer Xefer with a modern r'n'b song with rock elements. However, "Judge" did not reach the final, as it stalled in 18th place in its semi final, scoring 44 points. |
BhutanBhutan debuted in GM/143 and has only competed the one time.
They sent a trio of 3 young singers: Sonam Wangchen, Jigdrel Wangmo and Tinley Dorji with a pop song with strong local flavours. "Choeyi gazum" did not manage to qualify for the final, as 43 points were only enough for a 17th place in the semi final. |

Some countries have already selected their next entry, and the revelation of the songs have already begun. So if you haven't already submitted a song for your country, it is time to make your choice! Zimbabwe |

Armenia |
Zimbabwe debuted in GM/79 and has competed 5 times. We last saw them on stage in GM/148. Their best result is a 5th place.
Of their 5 entries only 1 did not make it to the final, and in my oppinion all 5 songs are great. I have thus opted for their most successful entry: Nina Watson's "Close to me" with the strong instrumental hook. It reached 5th place scoring 91 points. See all the songs from Zimbabwe |
Afghanistan debuted in GM/130 and has only competed the one time.
They sent Valy with a strong folklore pop song. However, "Dar in zamana" did not reach the final, as it stalled in 13th place in its semi final, scoring 57 points. |
Armenia debuted in GM/43 and has competed 39 times. We last saw them on stage in GM/153. Armenia has reached the top 10 twice and holds a 5th place as their personal best.
I have selected something a little different and actually atypical of Armenia's entries. "My Heart with Joy" is a blend of gospel, country and psalm mixed together with a little pop! Jasmin Gibb scored 66 points for her effort, finishing 17th. See all the songs from Armenia |

Tunisia |
Uganda |
Zambia |
Tunisia debuted in GM/71 and has competed 5 times. We last saw them on stage in GM/129. In only 5 participations they have won two gold medals!
Of their 5 entries only 1 did not make it to the final, but still that is the song, I have chosen. It has a very local flavour and to me sums up Tunisia. Ahmed El Sherif's "Bein el nas" was their middle entry and stalled in the semi final, where it finished 14th with 45 points. See all the songs from Tunisia |
Uganda debuted in GM/59 and has competed 9 times. We last saw them on stage in GM/142. Uganda has been to 4 finals, winning one bronze medal.
I have selected their second most succesful entry - the mellow and laid back "Omukwano" performed by Samalie Matovu. It finished in a respectable 13th place scoring 72 points. See all the songs from Uganda |
Zambia debuted in GM/117 and has competed twice. We last saw them on stage in GM/132.
They have qualified for one final, reaching 9th place. Their second and so far last entry was also the most successful. A strong, anthemic song entitled "Hurts". Performed by Emeli Sandé, it reached 9th place with 87 points. See all the songs from Zambia |
Have you seen the maps?As the contest keeps expanding around the globe and the number of countries never to tread the Global Music stage diminishes, I thought it would be interesting to visualize this on some world maps.
The map on the right shows have many top 10 results the different countries have achieved. There are others showing number of participations, victories etc. scattered around the website, so go have a look. Go to Statistics and the different continents under The Countries. Maps will now also create a quick visual overview of each edition. You may already have noticed the map on the page for the current edition, showing the participating countries. Another one showing the results have been added. I hope you will find the colourful world maps interesting. |

Swaziland debuted in GM/136 and has competed twice. We last saw them on stage in GM/149.
They have never qualified for the final. Their first entry was in my oppionion also the best. Bholaja Ngubane's "Indzawo yami" is a quiet and smooth song with a hint of chanting. Very soothing. It finished 14th in its semi final scoring 33 points. See all the songs from Swaziland |
Tanzania debuted in GM/94 and has only competed the one time.
They sent an upbeat feel good song performed by Diamond Platnumz. "Moyo wangu" scored 42 points and finished 17th in its semi final, which was not enough to qualify for the final. |
Togo debuted in GM/71 and has only competed the one time.
They sent Afia Mala with a song mixing jazz, soul, a bit of gospel and African drums! However, "Segne" did not reach the final, as it stalled in 19th place in its semi final, scoring only 30 points. |

Sudan |
South Africa debuted in GM/32, has competed 84 times and is a current participant.
They have reached the top 10 twelve times and won the contest twice! There are a lot of great songs from South Africa to choose from, and I have gone for a song which finished just outside the podium, when it competed. MonArk's "Build it up" is a melodic and catchy popsong with a slight rock feel to it. It finished 4th in GM/128 scoring 124 points. See all the other songs from South Africa |
South Sudan debuted as recently as in GM/151 and has only competed the one time.
They sent the female singer Yvonne Darcq with the modern "Fearless", which has stomping folkloric elements as well. However, there were not enough points for the country to qualify for the final, as it finished 17th in its semi final scoring 50 points. |
Sudan debuted in GM/75 and has only competed the one time.
They sent a very authentic song, deeply rooted in the African soul. Jamal Porto performed "Gamar badawi" on stage, but did not score enough points to pass through to the final. He ended up in 18th place in his semi final with 20 points. |

Sierra Leone |
Senegal debuted in GM/79 and has competed 4 times. We last saw them on stage in GM/82. They have been to 2 finals and have an 18th place as the best result.
I have chosen one of the songs reaching the final, which also happen to be their debut entry. Two super stars on stage should have lead to instant success. Still the catchy pop song "Like I never left" performed by Akon and Whitney Houston finished only 26th with 66 points. See all the songs from Senegal |
Seychelles debuted in GM/131 and has competed twice. We last saw them on stage in GM/132.
They have qualified for one final, reaching 24th place. Their first entry was also the most successful. A catchy, tropical song, making it difficult to sit still. Dezil' reached 24th place with "Tu peux crier" scoring 32 points. See all the songs from Seychelles |
Sierra Leone debuted in GM/129 and has only competed the one time.
They sent a duet performed by Moh Kouyaté and Mariama. "Darré" is a beautiful song with that distinct African feel and sound. It was, however, not enough for the country to qualify for the final, and it finished 21st in its semi final scoring 20 points. |

Still, I'm a reasonable guy, so if you have any problem meeting the deadline -> let me know in advance, thanks. |

Ivory Coast |
Kenya |
Liberia |
Ivory Coast debuted in GM/101 and has competed 5 times. We last saw them on stage in GM/110.
They have never qualified for a final. I have chosen one of the songs by the one artist, who participated more than once: Magic System. The catchy song "Magic in the air" finished 12th in its semi final scoring 53 points. |
Kenya debuted in GM/02 and has competed 7 times. We last saw them on stage in GM/150.
They have been to 3 finals and even won the contest on their first participation! I have chosen one of the songs that did not qualify for the final. It's a quiet, but still powerful song with an intense African sense and beauty to it. Ayub Ogada's "Kothbiro" finished 15th in its semi final scoring 45 points. |
Liberia debuted in GM/105 and has only competed the one time.
They sent the young singer Jerrilyn Mulbah with the happy song "Leka". Still it was not enough for the country to qualify for the final, and it finished 12th in its semi final scoring 54 points. |
Global Music continues in...
We don't know yet, but it is time to find out who will be competing!
Some countries have already selected their next entry, and the revelation of the songs have already begun. So if you haven't already submitted a song for your country, it is time to make your choice! We already know that Ukraine will make their comeback next month, and we will have at least one debuting country! Stay tuned to find out who it is! Last day to submit your next song is August 31st. |

Please meet the Deadlines
Apparantly, it is necessary to remind everyone about the meaning of deadlines...
If the last day to vote is the 15th, I should receive your votes before the 15th turns into the 16th in Central Europe. We are players all around the world, and I understand that it might be difficult to keep track of the different time zones, but you only have to check how many hours you are behind Central Europe once to figure out the last time for your to votes. It might be in the middle of the afternoon..... Those of you who are ahead of Central European Time (CET) should not have any problems.... If you can't figure it out, then let me know and I will inform you once and for all. Central European Time (CET) is Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) +1 hour. I also understand that we all have lives and not everything revolves around Global Music. If you are running late with your votes, I am a reasonbale person, so drop me a short message, if you need a little more time. 99 times out of 100, an extension is granted. Thank you! |

Ghana |
Guinea |
Guinea-Bissau |
Ghana debuted in GM/93 and has competed 13 times. We last saw them on stage in GM/144.
They have reached the top 10 three times with a 4th place as their best result. I have chosen one of their non-qualifiers: Kae Sun and his beautiful and sensual song "Ship and the globe", which was also their very first entry. It finished 18th in its semi final scoring 32 points. |
Guinea debuted in GM/82 and has competed twice. We last saw them in GM/83.
They have been in the final once, finishing 23rd. And I think their finalist is their best entry so far. Indo Aminata's "Love will be on our side" finished 23rd scoring 53 points. |
Guinea-Bissau debuted in GM/120 and has only competed the one time.
They sent group Bliss with the haunting but still soothing "Wish you were here", but didn't qualify for the final. It finished 17th in its semi final scoring 50 points. |

Eritrea |
Egypt debuted in GM/01 and has competed 13 times. We last saw them on stage in GM/147.
They have reached the top 10 twice and won the contest once. I have chosen one of their non-qualifiers: Amr Diab and his beautiful song "Tamally maak", which finished 16th in its semi final scoring 40 points. |
Equatorial Guinea debuted as recently as GM/137 and has only competed the one time.
They sent Nelida Karr with "Ripelo", which finished 14th in its semi final scoring 49 points. |
Eritrea debuted in GM/55 and has competed three times. We last saw them in GM/101.
They have been in the final once, finishing 11th. I have, however, chosen one of their non-qualifiers, as I think their first entry "Hatitomni abey adki elom" by Abeba Haile has a far more charming "local" flavour. It finished 16th in its semi final scoring 35 points. |

They have been in the final once, finishing 22nd. All of their 3 entries are great in their own way, so choosing a favourite was not easy. There is a very loungy and laid back feeling to "Our love" performed by Luisito Quintero and Anané. It did not qualify for the final, finishing 17th and last in its semi final with 29 points |

You have decided....
Three suggestions were put forward in the first Poll for the Players, giving you the chance to make changes to the game.
And here is what you decided to do: 1st suggestion: Change the number of direct finalists from 5 to 6. Result: Stay with 5 direct finalists = 56 % Change to 6 direct finalists = 44 % Outcome: No changes will thus be made. The top 5 from the final will go straight to the final of the following edition, and the manager will still hand out a Wild Card to one of the songs, which finishes in 11th place in their semi final. 2nd suggestion: Remove instrumental numbers from the contest allowing only songs with vocals. Result: Instrumental numbers are okay = 28 % A song must have vocals = 72 % Outcome: You have chosen to not allow instrumental numbers to compete. From Global Music 149 and onwards, songs must thus have some vocals to be eligable to compete. 3rd suggestion: Close down the Global Music Forum on Facebook Result: Keep the Forum going = 36 % Close down the Forum = 64 % Outcome: The Global Music Forum on Facebook will be shut down immediately. The monthly voting for Global Music Royalty will from now on be a part of the Final Voting form, making sure that all players actively take part in selecting our Royalties. |
The next poll
A few suggestions for the next Poll for the Players have come in on the forms. These suggestions will be put forward in our next poll, which will be launched some time during the autumn. One suggestion has, however, already been put into effect without being tried in the poll.

Back then, Canada claimed their only gold medal so far, when Melanie Fiona finished on top with the infectious "Monday Morning". Canada has qualified for this edition's final - so can they do it again in the city of gondolas? Until we find out - Enjoy the lovely retro feeling of "Monday morning"! |

Goodbye to the old website
From March 21st the old website at www.globalmusicsongcontest.com will cease to exist.
All of the old information has not been merged into the new website yet, but in order to keep the old one alive, I have to sign up for another year, and I don't want to pay for that, as most of the pages are not watched regularly. I will continue working on converting all the old pages (inactive countries, previous editions and old statistics) to the current website www.globalmusicsong.com, but it will take some time. In the meantime, if you need any of the old info, just let me know. |

Love brings us back to Europe
Global Music 145 was yet another exciting edition, though the voting was a little less nail biting than last time.
Alfie Arcuri recently won a bronze medal, but this time he went all the way, fighting off Poland and San Marino to take the trophy and bring us back to Europe after two months in Africa. Enjoy the love anthem "Love is love" again! Congratulations Italy! |

Change of entries
You are always urged to submit your next song as soon as possible.
The presentation of the songs for the upcoming edition will begin on Facebook some time after the semi finals of the current edition, depending of the number of songs received.
Once a song has been presented here, you can no longer change it, so it will be your next entry.
You can choose to withdraw a song at anytime before the beginning of an edition, but you cannot replace it with another. You thus have to sit that edition out.

Blast from the Past
The first time we travelled to Africa for the contest was back in GM / 03, when Nairobi hosted the event following Mercy Myra's victory in the previous contest. The best placed African country on this occasion was Namibia, who sent J J Stephens to Nairobi with the catchy "Jy is die rots". The song reached a very respectable 8th place, scoring 66 points. Enjoy this infectious schlager again! |

Send me an e-mail with your idea or suggestion, and a Poll for the Players will be held a few times a year to see, if you want me to implement the suggestion. |

Multinational collaboration brought victory to Egypt!
Global Music 144 will be remembered for one of the most exciting votings in a very long time, and not until the very last set of votes were the gold, silver and bronze settled.
Adel Tawil, who is German, but of Egyptian descent teamed up with two of Africas biggest music legends: Epypt's own Mohamed Mounir and Senegal's Youssou N'Dour to create the winning formula - a fantastic mix of traditional African sounds and rhythms and a European dance beat. Having not graced the top 10 since the very first edition of Global Music, Egypt returned with vigour to secure this fantastic victory and keep the contest on the African continent for another edition. Enjoy "Eine Welt eine Heimat" again! |

The Best of 2017We have another winner to praise!
In January, we also crowned the best song in Global Music in 2017. The top 3 of each of the year's regular editions got another chance to shine, and it was one of the songs who did not manage to win on it's original participation, which ended up on top overall. So we congratulate American superstar P!nk for the best performance of the year. United States did not win a gold medal in 2017, but now they do get the biggest crown of them all. Well done HoD Robert! |

Welcome
Welcome to the first official Global Music Newsletter!
The newsletters will be published 2-3 times each month and will replace some of the regular e-mails, which I have been sending to your mailbox. They will contain big and small news and have some semi-regular features to keep you updated with our beloved contest. Though I am the chief editor, I will be more than happy to include your news, so if you have something to tell us all or have an idea for a fun feature, do let me know! From now on, you will receive an e-mail notice whenever a new edition of the newsletter has been published. You will still receive reminders for voting and submitting songs, when needed. Usually reminders are only sent to those who have yet to vote or submit a song. Once I have confirmed your song, you will receive a confirmation, but I will no longer sent out voting confirmations. Mistakes might happen, and I will miss sending out a reminder to you. Therefore, do always keep an eye on the deadlines yourself, as it is your own responsibility to meet them! |
So without further ado - I give you the first official Global Music Newsletter! I hope you will enjoy it. Mikkel Chief Editor and Manager |
